Rangatiratanga

We are learning about Rangatiratanga (Leadership and initiative).

This is what we think Rangatiratanga is...
  • Helping new kids –showing them what to do and where things are
  • Doing something without being asked
  • Helping
  • Solving problems for ourselves… thinking
  • Leading by example… showing by doing
  • It is not being a bossy boots
Rangatiratanga (Leadership and Initiative) - it is all about thinking and making some choices for ourselves. 

We need to think for ourselves!!

My Reflection
I show rangatiratanga in the playground by: including people because I am being, I am leading by doing the right thing.

I show rangatiratanga in the classroom when: I do things for people like doing the calendar and putting thins away for people without being asked.

It was really hard when: people do things I'm going to do to show initiative like when I am going to put all the pencils away and somebody else does it.

Jamie, you are a great learner and show leadership by making sure you are doing the right thing and you always try your very best. Remember initiative is all about making some choices for yourself, have a think and then have a go. Your next step is to take a few risks... it doesn't matter if you make a mistake, mistakes can be some of the best learning!

Reflection

Thinking about what I already know helps me because: I already know it and it gets me thinking before I start reading.

It was really hard when: the teacher doesn't help us when where stuck because I need to think for myself so I learn.

Something that really helped me was: predicting whats going to happen next in my story. It helps me make sure my reading makes sense.

Something new I learned was: new words, about animals because we read nonfiction books.

We do a lot of chatting before we start reading. That helps us to 'engage our prior knowledge' and think about what we already know so we are ready for reading and learning. Remember to listen to the ideas and thinking of others in the group, we can all learn from each other. I know that you are a great reader so your next learning step is to use what you know and all the different strategies you have to work out tricky words rather than relying on others.

Fractions and Problem Solving

We have been learning all about fractions and what a fraction is. We decided that a fraction is fair. It needs to be the same shape, same size or the same number. 
We have also been doing loads of thinking and problem solving in our maths. We think problem solving is hard but we are very proud of our learning!

Reflection

My favourite part was: we got to learn something new (problem solving) and it was a bit hard but we did lots of practise.

It was really hard when: when we don't know where to start to solve the problem because the teacher is not there.

Something that really helped me was: doing lots of practise and talking about the problems and how to start them and answer them. 

Something new I learned was: It doesn't matter if you get them wrong, it is all about thinking so we learn.

You have a clear understanding of 'half and not half' and have used this understanding to help you with other fractions. You share your ideas in the group and use materials to show your thinking. 
Remember when problem solving, slow down and think about what the question is asking and then think about what you already know. Lots of thinking and drawing pictures can help you solve tricky problems. Your next learning step is to have a go, take a risk - it doesn't matter if you are not always right. That can be how you do some great learning!

My puppy daisy

In High5 we have been practising writing to describe. That means we are trying to get the reader to see what we see, we are using our words to create a picture. We have been adding details to our writing to help make the picture clearer.

Task:
Our job is to do this planning and write our own story about a person in our family that is special to us.

Success Criteria:

Reflection

My favourite part was: working through it when it was really hard because I wanted to give but Kerri made me carry on. I am really proud of my writing!

It was really hard when: we had to add lots of details and I had no more ideas.

Something that really helped me was: having some quiet time in the office with nobody to talk to. I had some thinking time.

Something new I learned was: I can do it! When it's hard you have to keep on going.

What a great reflection Jamie. This was a very tricky piece of writing for you. I know you found it difficult to come up with lots of ideas, that is why it is improtant to use the planning tools we have in class (move, look, hear...). All that hard work and thinking was woth it, what a great piece of writing you have created. Daisy sounds like a loveable mix of trouble and fun!
Your next learning step is to think about the space where you are writing, is it helping your learning? You are welcome to find a quiet space like the office if it is going to help.

Wearable Arts

We have been learning all about design on our way to create our wearable art garment. We started with some challenges…
1. In teams create and build the tallest tower
Our tower was very tall, but then it fell over...












We worked together; sharing ideas and elping each other. We have learned that it is really important to design and plan our creations before we start. This means we all know what we are trying to make.
2. Build a shelter for Leo our class bear

We learned that it can be very tricky to work in groups and we all have to take turns.
3. Work together to create a costume for 1 member of our team to model. 
Here we are in our costumes!
We remembered that it is important to design our work before we start. We also learned that we have to be careful with our materials, newspaper and tinfoil rip quiet easily.

We are going to use what we have learned to create our wearable arts garment.

Reflection

My favourite part was: doing the making because we have never done it before. I like using different materials like the feathers and painting.

It was really hard when: trying to make the feathers stick to my kakapo wings. I think it because there is still some material stuck to the tape.

Something that really helped me was: doing our plan and design at the start because it helped me to get my ideas so I knew what to do. Choosing the animal so I knew what I was.

Something new I learned was: wearable art is art that you can wear, it something that is made by hand and it's very hard to make.

Wow Jamie! You had a clear plan of what you wanted and you worked hard to create two fantastic pieces. You listened to advice and accepted help as you needed it, what a great learner. I think you have a great understanding of the design process (starting with planning, and then some creating, changing, creating and fixing).
